About Kinbaku

Kinbaku / Shibari

Kinbaku or Shibari is the Japanese art of rope tying. It blends connection, movement, and communication, using rope to create form, sensation, and an experience that can be playful, intimate, or expressive. At its heart, it is a collaborative practice built on consent, care, and trust.

People come to kinbaku for many reasons: to explore craft and aesthetics, deepen partnered connection, or learn a mindful, body-led practice. Every tie is different, and the focus is always on safety, respect, and mutual enjoyment.

The Venue

The Nest

Our events take place at The Nest in Cardiff city centre.

The space is as colourful as it is functional, and is available for private and professional hire. Learn more at cardiffnest.com.

The Nest as shown here has been set up for a Clwb Nawa event. Visit The Nest website for more information.

Location

You can plan your journey using Cardiff Queen Street Station as a reference point; The Nest is just a few minutes' walk away. The exact address is given to our our approved members.

  • By car: The nearest car parks are NCP Cardiff Rapports and Greyfriars.
  • By public transport: The Nest is a 5-minute walk from Cardiff Queen Street and 15 minutes from Cardiff Central.
  • By bike: Secure push-bike storage can be arranged with advance notice.

The Space

The Nest is a large high-ceilinged room split into two distinct areas: the chill out space, with comfortable seating, a kitchenette and padded flooring, and the teal area, which is arranged into a comfortable floor-tying space for our events.

The Nest is a contemporary space full of colour, botanical prints and upholstery. There is a small porch suitable for storing shoes and coats, and a WC with loo and sink, but no shower.

There is a suspension frame with bamboo, but its use is limited to those who have extensive experience of suspension and have learned from a professional educator. Please note that we do not teach suspension.

Access

  • The Nest is located on the ground floor, but there are a few steps at the entrance.
  • Doors are heavy, and the bathroom is not suitable for transfers.
  • Ambulatory wheelchair users may find the space workable with assistance, but it is not currently suitable for visitors with fully restricted mobility.

How do I join?

Clwb Nawa is strictly invitation-only. You can express your interest by signing up.

Why is this event invitation-only?

We aim to create a safe and comfortable environment for all participants. By keeping the event invitation-only, we can better manage the dynamics of the group and ensure that everyone feels safe and welcome.

Who is Clwb Nawa for?

We’re not a public event or a space for complete beginners. Participants must have some experience with shibari. Our focus is on skill, respect, and community and we welcome people aligned with our values. All gender identities, orientations, bodies, and backgrounds are welcome.

Do the sessions involve tuition?

We do not offer tuition at our peer events. We foster a community environment which allows people to learn from each other. Occasionally, we will invite guests to offer workshops or demonstrations.
